They can perform simple, routine excavations to unique projects that are 40 feet deep or more. Excavation projects include:

Trenching
Roadway / Parking
Hydrovac
Pond
Pump Stations
Culverts

We have our own a fleet of equipment that includes 10 or more excavators that range from small units (8,000 lbs.) to larger ones with extended reach (145,000 lbs.). The excavators can be fitted with a variety of tools such as clam shells, compactors, whole packs and augers. Our equipment inventory includes skid steers, dozers, loaders, and even a farm tractor for final grading and cleanup work.

Trench Excavation

We have more than 30 different kinds of shoring boxes to ensure the safety of the workers and the stability of the walls. When projects are extremely deep, we have different subcontractors who help us with specialty work.

Roadways & Parking Lots

Surface excavation for roadways or parking lots may appear to be the easiest of the excavation projects performed by Edward Kelly & Sons but don’t let these projects fool you, it takes a lot of experience to have these surfaces be level and crown properly so they successful drain. In addition, the infrastructure will generally require a series of culverts, and underground water runoff systems dispose of the rainwater.

Hydrovac Excavation

Hydrovac is very useful in many applications especially when trying to locate utilities or repairing potholes in congested areas. Using an industrial sized vacuum, we inject air or water to loosen up the soil and then use the vacuum to excavate the material out of way. If you suspect you are close to utilities, you can vacuum to remove materials so the repair can be completed without damaging the utilities.

Pond Excavation

Often, we are asked to build retention ponds in new subdivisions or commercial properties. We are guide by engineer’s blueprints which meet local and State requirements. Occasionally we are asked to remove sediment from existing ponds which means we will setup a bypass so we can dewater or drain them, muck out or remove the sediment, and return them to service.

Pump Stations

Our work with pump stations could be new installations or a repair & rebuild. A pump station, also known as a pumping station or a sewage pumping station, is a storage and collection chamber that lifts and distributes wastewater or sewage when it cannot naturally be carried by gravity.

Repair & Rebuild

Older pump stations can wear out or fail, because of the way hydrogen sulfide gas eat away or rot the older metals used to construct them. We will then go in and rebuild the entire system by replacing the valves, gears, and piping.

Culverts

Culverts can fail for a variety of reasons, and when they do they need to be rebuilt. The cause could be related to:

  • Structure or material failure,
  • Failure due to capacity and volume, or
  • Maintenance, environmental or incorrect installation.

What to Expect With Culverts

Edward Kelly and Sons has replaced many culverts over the years and are able to diagnose what caused the failure and replace the culvert with proven structural and material solutions. When possible, Kelly can also use grouting to aid in the repair if the overall structure and sound, except for the pipe separation. We recently repaired the 84” sewer under Bowsher High School football field when joints failed causing sinkhole in middle of field. We were able to mobilized and repair without excavation in 3 weeks, saving replacing the entire turf football field.
